Report 2008/1: Perinatal health indicators in the Brussels-Capital Region 1998–2004

This report presents the results of the analysis of statistical births and death certificates of children aged less than one year old living in the Brussels Region, during the period 1998-2004. It reviews the main perinatal health indicators and changes over recent years: the various components of foetal-infantile mortality and the causes of deaths, the frequency of prematurity, low birth weight and multiple births and the frequency of obstetric surgery. The links between these indicators are analysed. The socio-demographic characteristics (the mother’s age, the household’s social status and the mother’s nationality) are also analysed as well as their impact on perinatal health. These results are interpreted and compared with the results recorded in other European regions.
